The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome" (Acts 23:11).
Not everyone gets the opportunity to have the Lord Jesus standing next to them, telling them what's going to happen next. This is truly superatural revelation and certainly one way people in the Bible clearly discerned the specific will of God. But as common as this was for the apostle Paul and the other apostles, and as common as this was for the prophets and patriarchs of the Old Testament, it is not so common with us. And I would surmise that most of what people claim today as supernatural revelation is not that but simply the exercise of their own minds and hearts as they try to use wisdom in charting a course for their lives.
Many people say something like "I have peace about it" and think that this is God's confirmation of His will. Some people put a kind of fleece before the Lord, and say something like, "If she answers the phone when I call her, I will know that You have chosen her to be my wife." It is not much different from people that use charms or trust in horoscopes.
I believe that when God reveals His specific will, the Bible teaches that it will always be supernatural, not based on some uncertain sense of "'peace" or some artificial test we give to God. Otherwise, God gives us the freedom to choose our way based on the discernment that we glean from His Word and the wisdom that we gain from life experience. There is an excellent work that discusses this matter in depth. I strongly encourage you to read it. Here's an excerpt. Here's the book on amazon.com.
